Aiming to become one of the premier golf courses in the state of Texas, the new Champion Lakes was rebuilt by SAJO Construction in 1999 under the guidance of world-renowned architect Charles Howard. Since reopening in 2000, it established itself as one of the premier golf facilities in South Texas, serving as the home course for some of the biggest tournaments in our area including the
McAllen Amateur Golf Championship and the prestigious
VAMOS Golf Tournament. Champion Lakes also hosted all four (4)
LPGA's Futures Tour stops in McAllen and is now the home course for thirty (30) Winter Texan Leagues; its popular Wednesday Sundowner accounts for a record 1,784 participants in one (1) season!
The beautiful par 72 championship layout boasts a length of 5,779 yards from the middle tees but can quickly turn into a challenging 6,771 yards if played from the back tees. It’s wide, generous, and rolling fairways feature “419” Bermuda grass and are lined by Common Bermuda roughs and mounds that at places create a links style atmosphere. Fourteen (14) man-made lakes provide the golfer with pleasant thrills and some of the most panoramic views in the area. The recent addition of new tees and trees further enhance the character of the layout.
Moreover, Champion Lakes Golf Course has a fully remodeled clubhouse that sits overlooking the entire golf course. The Pro Shop is stocked with the latest in golf apparel and equipment and offers a great variety of choices for all of your golfing needs. It is complimented by a restaurant facility that provides guests with a varied short order menu and all kinds of cool beverages. The clubhouse is open 364 days a year from 6:30 am to dusk (Only closes on Christmas Day - Dec. 25).
The Totally Exciting Champion Lakes Golf Course is open to the public and also features a practice area that is second to none. The driving range is lighted for night time operation, covers 350 yards in length, has eleven (11) target greens, a short game practice area and a 10,000 square foot practice putting green. Depending on personal preference and changing wind conditions, golfers can choose from teeing grounds available at both ends of the practice fairway. It is open daily from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, except Mondays when it opens at 11:00 am.
